2019 Candle Trends
Congratulations! You’ve made it through 2018, and what a year it was. Now that we’re through the holidays it’s time to get those end-of-year items checked off your list… Take down the Christmas tree, commit to the yoga studio and get up to date on the latest 2019 candle trends.
This is one of our favorite blogs to write because it gives us so much to look forward to in the upcoming year. We love peeking into the future on what will drive the industry and bring the latest and greatest into our home and yours.
Looking back at our 2018 Candle Predictions post, we’re giving a light pat on the back for forseeing the increased demand in unique vessels. Oud dominant scents and other gender fluid fragrances have dominated the market.
2018 is now officially behind us, which means it’s time to share our expertise and insights on what you should expect for candle trends and beyond in 2019!
2019 Candle Trends
Experiences with Candles
The trend is clear by now: experiences are a huge priority. People are putting off home purchases so they can spend money on vacations. Vacations and experiences are a $100 billion (with a B) industry and growing at a rate of 10%.
Knowing this, it only makes sense that the trend is to bring the concept of an ‘experience’ into the home. Look for more emphasis on accessorizing with candles, succulents and crystals together in the bedroom, home office or dinner table.
Pairing and matching up different items alongside your candles can often evoke emotions of calm, confidence or sentimentality just from a quick glance.
Add experience beyond the expected by using a wooden wick in your candles. Wooden wicks crackle as they burn to create a unique, multi-sensory experience. The National Candle Association predicted wooden wicks to be one of the top candle trends in 2019.
Travel tins will remain popular in 2019 for their association to nothing other than travel, of course!
This desire for experiential products goes rather nicely with our recent blog on creating the perfect ambiance with candles. Make sure to spend a moment with that post to ensure you’ve got all of your angles covered.
The Next Big Scents
Summer fragrances are no longer just for the warm months of the year (in Southern California, that’s most of them!)
Consumers are using light, fresh fragrances that are typically associated with the summer months year-round to transport them to a tropical state of mind.
Dozens of brands, from Calvin Klein to Escada are launching versions of popular scents in summer versions. We don’t have to wait for beach weather to experience the white lily, pomegranate and honey fragrances we associate with summer.
What may be the most unique point of this trend is this: These scents are now socially acceptable to be present in your home year-round. That means you can now wear white AND burn your favorite fragrance past Labor Day — great news for everyone.
Look to evoke a feeling of a warm day on the beach using Salt Air + Honeydew fragrance. Create a sentiment of your favorite family vacation using a tropical, fruity fragrance like Creme de Mamao + Cassis.
The point is to use fragrance to tell a scented story, and in 2019, that story is a sweet, summer day!
Honey in Everything
Honey is everywhere we look. It’s sold for consumption as honeycomb in farmer’s markets and stores, utilized in thousands of hair care, body, and cosmetic products, and now, it has made its way into fragrance!
Fun fact: honey has the longest shelf life of food products lasting up to 3,000 years. Sorry, Twinkie.
Honey’s health benefits are widely discussed as it is very heart-healthy and improves cholesterol levels. It is a good alternative to sugar and packed with antioxidants. AND it tastes good on almost everything: from cheese to pizza to grapefruit to salmon. What more do you need?
Expect to see a lot more of this natural wonder in personal care, candle fragrances, candle wax and snacks in 2019.
Statement pieces seem to hit these “What’s Next” stories every time, but it cannot be overlooked as we talk about candle trends for this next year.
Make sure as much thought goes into the vessel as the way the candle smells and sounds.
The last couple of years have seen a lot of blacks, whites and strong greys make their way into interior decorating. Smaller pieces of color pop is very in for 2019. But don’t overdo it. Think of the yellow vessel before the yellow throw rug (it’s on the clearance shelf for a reason).
Sustainability is a word that started gaining traction five years ago and now has become more commonplace across all industries.
According to Nielsen, 66% of global consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable goods. For the millennial generation (born between 1977 and 1995), this is a very important aspect as they are a more environmentally-conscious generation. They have less things, but are will to pay more for a product they support. 73% of millennials are willing to pay more for sustainable products.
Re-using candle vessels is something we love to see and will look forward to as a full-blown candle trend in 2019. Check out 10 unique ways to repurpose your candle vessels on our blog to get your creative wheels spinning.
You can also expect to see more unique uses of items as candle vessels from makers all over the world.
While we’re on the topic of sustainability, it is worth noting that all Wooden Wick Co.’s candle wicks are sustainably farmed and sourced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified mills. To that end, The Wooden Wick Co. donates a portion of its revenues to Trees for the Future. This is a unique organization that provides families with food, income, empowerment, unity, leadership, education. Trees for the Future is planting and nurturing trees across the world.
Pinterest is a constant source of inspiration for so many of us. Pinterest always has it’s finger on the pulse of what’s next, so we can’t overlook what seems to be trending.
